What Does the Bible Say About Anxiety and Worry?

The Bible takes anxiety seriously as a spiritual issue, offering both compassion for those who struggle and powerful remedies rooted in God's character and promises.

Jesus on Worry

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus devotes significant space to worry (Matthew 6:25-34). He commands "do not be anxious" not once but three times, addressing anxiety about food, clothing, and tomorrow. His argument is from the lesser to the greater: God clothes the lilies and feeds the birds — how much more will He care for those made in His image? The remedy is seeking first God's kingdom, trusting that "all these things will be added to you" (v.33).

The Philippians 4 Prescription

Paul's prescription for anxiety in Philippians 4:6-7 has four components: (1) Pray — bring every concern to God rather than carrying it yourself. (2) Supplicate — make specific requests, not vague worries. (3) Thanksgiving — approach God with gratitude for what He has already done. (4) Trust — release the outcome to God. The result is not the resolution of the problem but the guard of God's peace over your heart and mind.

Casting Your Cares

1 Peter 5:7 gives a simple but profound command: "casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you." The Greek word for "casting" is an aorist participle suggesting a decisive act — not a gradual process but an intentional offloading. The motivation is not just that God is powerful but that He personally cares for you. This is not escapism; it is trusting a capable, loving Father with what is beyond your control.

God's Presence in Fear

Isaiah 41:10 is one of Scripture's most repeated words of comfort: "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." The antidote to fear is not courage manufactured from within but the promise of God's presence and strength from without. The entire phrase "do not fear / be not afraid" occurs over 365 times in Scripture — once for every day of the year.

Rest in Christ

Matthew 11:28-30 contains one of the most tender invitations in Scripture: "Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." Jesus distinguishes between external rest and soul rest — the kind that comes from being yoked to One who is not a slave driver but a gentle shepherd.

Renewing the Mind

Romans 12:2 and Philippians 4:8 together teach the discipline of thought management. Anxiety is fed by negative thought spirals; the biblical remedy is to redirect the mind to what is true, honourable, just, pure, lovely, and commendable. This is not denial of problems but a deliberate reorientation of attention from the problem to the God who is greater than the problem.
