What Does the Bible Say About Love?

Love is the defining mark of a Christian — the greatest commandment, the greatest virtue, and the very nature of God Himself. The entire law hangs on love.

God Is Love

1 John 4:8 gives us one of the most stunning declarations in all of Scripture: "God is love." Not merely that God loves, or that love is one of God's attributes, but that love is the very essence of His being. Everything God does flows from this love. Creation, redemption, judgment, discipline — all proceed from a God who is love.

The Three Greek Words for Love

The New Testament employs several Greek words for love. Agape — the highest form — is selfless, unconditional, sacrificial love that seeks the good of its object regardless of merit. This is the word used in John 3:16 and 1 Corinthians 13. Phileo describes the warm affection of friendship. Storge (rarely used in NT) refers to family affection. The New Testament's primary emphasis is agape — the divine love that is impossible to manufacture and can only be poured out by the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5).

The Greatest Commandment

When asked to identify the greatest commandment, Jesus replied: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind… And the second is like it: Love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets" (Matthew 22:37-40). Love for God expressed in obedience, and love for neighbour expressed in service, is the summary of Christian ethics.

The Love Chapter — 1 Corinthians 13

Paul's famous hymn to love describes what it looks like in practice: patient, kind, not envious or boastful, not arrogant or rude, not insisting on its own way, not irritable or resentful, not rejoicing in wrongdoing but rejoicing in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things, and never fails. This is not a description of human achievement but of the Holy Spirit's work in a surrendered heart.

The New Commandment

Jesus gave His disciples "a new commandment" — not just to love their neighbours as themselves, but to "love one another as I have loved you" (John 13:34). The standard is now Christ's own self-giving love. This love between believers is meant to be the church's most powerful evangelistic tool: "By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another" (John 13:35).

Loving Our Enemies

One of Christianity's most countercultural teachings is Jesus's command to love enemies (Matthew 5:44). This does not mean pretending wrong is right, but choosing to pray for, bless, and seek the good of those who harm us. This is impossible in our own strength — it requires the Holy Spirit transforming our hearts.
