When Believers Bleed: Holding Faith Through Nigeria's Grief

When Believers Bleed: Holding Faith Through Nigeria's Grief

Another report of Christians killed in central Nigeria leaves hearts heavy. Here is what Scripture says to a grieving, wounded, but still hopeful Church.

The news of at least 31 Christians killed by herdsmen in central Nigeria has left many of us numb, angry, and heartbroken. In moments like this, we do not need quick answers. We need to hear from the God who draws near to the brokenhearted.

When Grief Has No Easy Words

Many of us have scrolled past stories like this so often that we fear our hearts are growing hard. If you feel tired, tearful, or even angry, you are not a bad Christian. You are a human being made in God's image, and God Himself is not indifferent to bloodshed.

The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. (Psalm 34:18 KJV)

Notice the word nigh. It means near. God does not stand at a distance from families burying their loved ones. He is close to the widow, the orphan, the wounded and the displaced. Before we try to explain anything, we can rest in this truth: our Father is near.

Lament Is Not Unbelief

Some believers think that asking God "Why?" or "How long?" shows weak faith. Yet the Bible is full of honest cries. Even in heaven, the martyrs speak.

And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth? (Revelation 6:10 KJV)

This verse shows that God is not offended by the cry of the suffering. He hears it and He keeps it. Lament is faith talking honestly to God instead of walking away from Him. When you bring your pain, your questions and even your anger to the Lord in prayer, you are trusting that He is still listening and still on the throne.

We Are One Body

Central Nigeria may be far from where you live. You may be in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Enugu or Abuja, or even abroad. Yet Scripture says the Church is one family.

And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it. (1 Corinthians 12:26 KJV)

If one part of the body is hurting, the whole body should feel it. That means we do not simply share a sad post and move on. We pray by name where we can. We give to trusted ministries and church-led relief efforts helping displaced families. We call, visit and encourage pastors and believers in vulnerable communities. The writer of Hebrews puts it plainly:

Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yet members of the body. (Hebrews 13:3 KJV)

To remember is to act with love, not only to feel sorry.

Leaving Justice in God's Hands

Our nation cries out for justice, and rightly so. We should pray for those in authority, and we should speak up for the protection of every citizen. But the Bible also warns our hearts against being poisoned by bitterness and revenge.

Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. (Romans 12:19 KJV)

This is not a call to be silent or passive. It is a reminder that God is the final Judge, and no killer escapes His sight. Our job is to pray for justice, love our neighbours, and refuse to answer evil with evil. Jesus even spoke to those who suffer for Him:

Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:10 KJV)

The ones who have gone home are not lost. They are held in the kingdom of heaven, and death has not had the last word over them.

The Church in Africa Will Keep Standing

The Church has faced fire before. From the early believers to the martyrs of our own continent, history shows that the gospel does not die when God's people suffer. Nigerian Christians are known for fervent prayer, joyful worship and stubborn hope, and God is not done with us. Let us not give in to fear, hatred or despair. Let us gather, pray, serve and keep telling the good news of a Saviour who knows suffering and who rose again.

A Prayer for Today

Father, we bring before You every family mourning in central Nigeria tonight. Draw near to the brokenhearted, comfort the widows and orphans, and heal the wounded. Protect Your people, restrain evil, and let justice and peace rise in our land. Keep our hearts free from bitterness, and teach us to love, pray and stand together as one body. In Jesus' name, Amen.
