What Does the Bible Say About Humility?

Humility is the soil in which all other Christian virtues grow. Scripture places it at the centre of discipleship — modelled supremely by Christ, who humbled Himself to the point of the cross.

The Humility of Christ

The greatest illustration of biblical humility is found in Philippians 2:5-8. The eternal Son of God, who was in the form of God and equal with God, "emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross." This is the descent from infinite glory to shameful death — not because of compulsion but by choice. Jesus is the supreme model of humility.

God Opposes the Proud

James 4:6 and 1 Peter 5:5 both quote Proverbs 3:34: "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." The verb "opposes" in Greek is antitassomai — military language meaning to set oneself in battle formation against. God actively resists proud people. This is among the most sobering statements in Scripture. Proverbs 16:18 confirms it: "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall." The biblical track record of proud leaders — Pharaoh, Nebuchadnezzar, Herod, Ananias — consistently ends in ruin.

Humility as Self-Forgetfulness

C.S. Lewis captured the biblical idea: "Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less." Philippians 2:3-4 says, "Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others." This is not self-deprecation — it is the freedom to focus outward that comes from being secure in God's love.

The Rewards of Humility

Scripture consistently connects humility with honour and elevation. Matthew 23:12: "Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted." Proverbs 11:2: "With the humble is wisdom." 1 Peter 5:6: "Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you." The paradox of the Kingdom: the path to greatness runs through service; the path to honour runs through humility.

Humility in Practice

Micah 6:8 describes God's requirement: "to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God." Walking humbly means holding our own opinions with an open hand, welcoming correction, submitting to spiritual authority, confessing wrongdoing without excuse, giving credit to others, and acknowledging our absolute dependence on God for every breath and every accomplishment. Romans 12:16 counsels: "Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly."
