What Does the Bible Say About Faith?

Faith is the foundation of the Christian life — the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. Without faith it is impossible to please God.

What Is Biblical Faith?

Hebrews 11:1 gives the classical definition: "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." Faith is not blind optimism or wishful thinking — it is confident trust in God based on His revealed character and promises. The Greek word pistis carries the idea of firm persuasion and conviction rooted in God's faithfulness.

Faith Comes by Hearing

Romans 10:17 teaches that "faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." Faith is not manufactured by human willpower; it is awakened by the proclamation of the gospel. This is why preaching, Bible reading, and teaching are essential — they are the means through which the Holy Spirit creates faith in the heart.

The Heroes of Faith — Hebrews 11

The great "Hall of Faith" in Hebrews 11 showcases men and women who acted on God's word without seeing the full picture: Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Rahab, and many more. What united them was not perfect circumstances but unwavering trust in God's promises. "By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out… not knowing where he was going" (Hebrews 11:8). This is the very nature of faith — moving at God's command even without seeing the destination.

Saving Faith

Ephesians 2:8-9 makes clear that salvation is "by grace through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works." Saving faith involves knowing the facts of the gospel, assenting to their truth, and personally trusting in Christ alone. It is not intellectual agreement alone; the demons believe and tremble (James 2:19).

Faith and Works

James famously declares that "faith without works is dead" (James 2:17). This is not contradicting Paul — it is describing the same coin from the other side. Paul explains how a person is justified before God (by faith alone); James explains how genuine faith is evidenced to others (by its fruit). True faith inevitably produces transformed living. A faith that never changes behavior is not saving faith at all.

Growing in Faith

Jesus spoke of "little faith" and "great faith," indicating that faith can grow. Romans 4 shows Abraham's faith being "strengthened" as he considered God's promise. We grow in faith through the Word (Romans 10:17), through answered prayer, through persevering trials (James 1:3), and through fellowship with other believers. "Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith" (Hebrews 12:2) is the ultimate source of growth.
